Center for Farmworker Families | Cuquio, Jalisco

We need your help for the following...

Education for Juanita Espinoza’s Children (Rancho Ojo de Agua Colorado): Juanita Espinoza lives with her youngest children and disabled husband in a deteriorating adobe hut about 45 minutes from the town of Cuquio. She wants more than anything for her children remaining at home to become educated. Elementary school education costs approximately $12 per year per child. Junior high school education costs $15 per month per child. Raquel, Ramona, Mariana, Eduardo and Valentín need your support for another year of elementary education. Maria Francisca is ready to attend the local junior high school. She needs your support to enroll in junior high school. Please consider sponsoring one of these children’s education. A Van to Transport Children from Los Sauces de Perez to Nearby Cuquio: The opportunity to become educated in the village of Los Sauces de Perez ends with an elementary education. The local junior high school is located in Cuquio. Because transportation is lacking, most children don’t become educated past 6th grade. Girls typically live with their families until they are young teenagers. They then marry and begin a life of repeated pregnancies as their only opportunity in life. A source of transportation from Los Sauces de Perez to Cuquio could change all that. Children would then be able to advance educationally and pursue other opportunities in life. Please consider making a donation for the purchase of a van to transport children to the junior high and high school in Cuquio. Photo: Maria Francisca, ready to attend Junior High School.

A Paved Road from Rancho Nuevo to Cuquio: José Palafox is the municipal government’s representative from the remote village of Rancho Nuevo, located on the border between the state of Jalisco and the state of Zacatecas. He and other corn farmers live in abject poverty with no transportation from their village to Cuquio. Most villagers walk an entire day over poorly defined dirt roads from their village to Cuquio for supplies. The village is so remote that the traditional maíz criollo corn is grown by using sustainable farming methods from the past. The corn is free of transgenes. The San José, California Latino community and other U.S. Latino communities want to purchase José’s and his neighbor’s corn so they won’t have to rely on the potentially genetically contaminated corn sold in most markets. The sale of maíz criollo to U.S. customers could raise the entire village out of poverty. The villagers need a paved road to transport corn from their remote village to Cuquio for shipment to the U.S. Please consider making a donation for road construction from Rancho Nuevo to Cuquio. A Well for Los Sauces de Perez: NAFTA has resulted in a return on the corn grown by the farmers of Los Sauces de Perez, that is less than the cost of growing it. Farmers in the community would like to grow organic vegetables to sell in nearby Cuquio. However, they need a reliable source of irrigation which can only be provided by a well. Please consider making a donation for well construction in Los Sauces de Perez.
